The koto (Japanese: 箏) is a Japanese stringed musicalinstrumentderived from the Chinese zheng, and similar to theMongolian yatga,the Korean gayageum, and the Vietnamese đàn tranh.The koto is thenational instrument of Japan. Koto are about 180centimetres (71in) length, and made from kiri wood (Paulowniatomentosa). Theyhave 13 strings that are usually strung over 13movable bridgesalong the width of the instrument. There is also a17-stringvariant. Players can adjust the string pitches by movingthe whitebridges before playing. To play the instrument, thestrings areplucked using three finger picks (thumb, index finger,and middlefinger).
